The following post is from an email sent to me by one of my closest friends. It was one of those things that you get through numerous parties such that finding out the original author is nearly impossible. Still – even without an ability to give attribution to the writer – I felt that this article might engage conversation. So, without further ado:
What My Brother-in-Law Thinks About The Threat of Socialism
People who complain about the threat of socialism remind me of the man from Virginia who went to college on the GI Bill and bought his first house with a VA loan. When a hurricane struck he got federal disaster aid. When he got sick he was treated at a veteran’s hospital. When he was laid off he received unemployment insurance and then got a SBA loan to start his own business. His bank funds were protected under federal deposit insurance laws. When he retired he went on Social Security and Medicare. The other day he got into his car, drove the federal interstate to the railroad station, parked in the public lot, took Amtrak to Washington and went to Capitol Hill to ask his congressman to get the government off his back.
What are your thoughts on this? Let’s talk.

If that is socialism I would like to have all of that and more….
EXACTLY! You see the typical argument against “social welfare programs” is that they are contrary to the American tradition. The fact is that the preamble to the Constitution states its purpose as: “in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence[sic], promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our prosperity”.
Hello Servant2All,
Most of the commnets i have ever heard about socialism has always been in the negative, coming from conservative camps.
After reading this article, it appears that we all already are and have been benefitting from, “socialism”.
We are! But the REAL DEAL is that we have never HAD a capitalist system. Proponents of capitalism have set it apart from the REAL system because that is the part they want to concentrate on. We have and have always had a “free enterprise” system – which necessarily incorporates aspects of capitalism AND socialism. I’ll expand on THAT further in a future article, either here (if it turns out to be a short one) or at http://4amoreperfectunion.blogspot.com if it turns out to be a longer one.
Exactly! Well-said!! After the Pompous Arrogant Bush + Brainwashed Flock era you would Think the Repubes would give the other side a chance – but Hell NO!! It’s called Democracy for a Reason – If the Current Government does a Lousy Job then Vote em OUT!!
Absolutely, Billy. Divisiveness is never and option in a time of crisis. The Coffee Party was recently formed with exactly that thought in mind. The link is here: http://www.coffeepartyusa.com/. Also, I did decide to further explore our “competitive market” system. I didn’t label it a “free enterprise” system for reasons explained therein. Check it out and tell me what you think? http://4amoreperfectunion.blogspot.com/2010/01/capitalist-and-socialist-elements-of.html
